Will Apple Allow iPhone Apps That Compete With Original Firmware Apps?

Fri, Jun 20, 2008

Apple, iPhone

Today I was wondering about the App Store and the new upcoming iPhone Apps. With a jailbroken iPhone, there are a ton of apps that do similar things as some of the original firmware apps, but better. These are considered replacements for the original Apple apps. My question is, will Apple allow this in the app store?

I have a few examples:

1. Snapture

Snapture.jpg

Snapture is a free replacement to the camera app on the iPhone. It does the job 10X better with many more features. Here is a list of features:

  • Digital Zoom
  • Quiet Mode
  • Multiple Image Sizes
  • Level Aid
  • Delay Timer
  • Color Modes
  • Multishot Mode

With Snapture, I would never need to use Camera.app again. Would Apple allow you to download something that does the job better than what they offer?

2. CalcPaper

CalcPaper is a full replacement for the Calculator app on the iPhone. CalcPaper keeps a record your calculations, allowing you to see what you have done. This is much more efficient rather than only having a small space for 1 calculation at a time. In my opinion, it is much better solution than Calculator.app

3. MoleSkin

MoleSkin is a great replacement for Notes.app. It allows for full organization of your notes plug the ability to sync your notes with your computer. If your really into taking notes,
Notes.app just will not do it for you. MoleSkin is a sweet app and can totally replace Notes.app

Will Apple allow developers to compete with their own apps. If so, they may end up being no use for a lot of apps because developers will make better, more efficient ones that have the same purpose.

What if Mozilla decided to make FireFox for the iPhone. What if they made this FireFox so much better than Safari that no one would use it anymore. I don’t see how Apple can let this happen and let all their hard work just be crumpled by developers.

I am for it, I just don’t see Apple being for it. As of now, they are allowing previews of apps that they have not made yet. Apps like games and other creative ideas they have not thought of such as Band.app.

If Apple were to allow this, it would put a lot of pressure on them to make their apps even better than the competition. This is something that we users love because it forces Apple to work to make things better and also allows for more options in terms of usability. People are already challenging the original iPhone Firmware apps, imagine how many people will when it actually becomes legal. Now the question is, will Apple stop this from happening or will they restrict all apps that have the same purpose as the originals?
