One of the best things about Mac OS X is the open-source community that we have. This is something you learn AFTER you get a Mac. Wh
en switching from my old Dell PC, I thought there would either be a lot of apps that I would have to buy in order to do the things I wanted to do. After using a Mac for a while, I have realized that I can do everything I want to do with the free apps that our great community makes for us. It’s not the same on Windows. Yes, there are a ton of free/open source programs on Windows, but it a very rare to see a free program on Windows that is the best of it’s class. On Mac OS X, this is not rare. We have some amazing developers, writings beautiful apps, not asking for penny. Mac OS X simply would not be nearly as good without these developers. In this post, I am giving those developers a round of applause by featuring them in my “Top 30+ Best Mac OS X FreeWare Apps”. Even if you are very familiar with Mac OS X freeware, look through this list, you might find something new.
Also, I am definitely missing tons of amazing freeware that I just don’t use or need. If you have a free app that you would like to share, please comment and I will be sure to add it to the list. Thanks so much guys, and enjoy:

JASeeqJaseeq allows you to search, listen and download songs from Seeqpod. It is against the law to download these songs. Although SeeqPod does not host content it encourages the adherence to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Courts have repeatedly held that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the doctrine of Fair Use shield search engines from liability. More information is available from the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA). So it may be legal to listen to the songs on seeqpod, but it is probably illegal to download the songs… |

After a fresh install of OSX, Quicksilver is the first app that I install on my Mac. QuickSilver is a app launcher. It is extremely fast and makes any app only a few keystrokes away. It is much faster for launching apps than Spotlight and it can be set up to feel as though it is part of the OS. No dock icon, no menubar icon. All you have to do is hit the keystroke, and there it is! Ready to serve. |

Skitch also recently came out of private beta, so now it is open to everyone. Enjoy. |

I’d rate Perian as a must-have, I don’t know how I missed it. I can now play a lot of stuff in QT that previously needed VLC.
Songbird definitely needs more work. It fails to import my iTunes library, guess Apple must have messed with the format?
And those links are now working, thanks

Nice list. The thing I most missed when I came over from Windows was a dual-pane file manager (similar to the old Norton Commander) - I finally came across muCommander, which works well and has a built-in FTP/SFTP client which is good for uploading and downloading (only one issue - you can’t do other things with the program while an upload or download is in progress, that is to say, the file transfer window isn’t detachable. But then, some other programs of this type on other platforms have the same issue). For those that value looks over functionality and don’t mind running a program that hasn’t been updated since Tiger, Xfolders offers somewhat similar functionality, but does not have the built-in FTP client.

I’ve already downloaded like six of them just from reading your article. The only one I think is missing is Disk Inventory X.
It’s an awesome app that gives you a visual map of your Hard Drive so you can free up space easily. Just be careful and don’t delete any system files.
check it out here.
