This screencast is proof that iTunes 7.7 accepts apps by simple draging and dropping the app into iTunes. Although I have not tested syncing the apps with an iPhone, I am sure it would not work since all apps are wrapped with DRM. This is still interesting because it give us a new way of sharing and spreading apps. It would be as simple as e-mailing the apps to your friend. Watch the video and tell me what you think
I am really sorry for all the confusion in the last day, but I was notified by some people that I could get in some trouble for what I was doing so I decided to be a little safe and take down the posts content. I guess it doesn’t really make a difference any more, so I have now updated the post for the last time and putting back what was once there. Sorry about that.

I wonder if the apps will work on the iPhone or Touch though? They may need to be digitally signed by Apple or something of that nature.

this doesn’t necessarily mean it will sync.
remember, all apps are digitally signed, which is why that developers had to wait until they got their dev certificates before they could do anything.
Also, Apple allows you enterprise and classrooms to distribute apps, but they will only install on specified iphones, not for general distribution.

ah, thanks for the clear up arn.
It is still interesting. Do you think it is possible hackers will be able to get around this?
Dallas reply on July 9th, 2008 9:47 am:
Yes. But what would be the purpose other than illegal distribution or to create malware? You can put your app in the App store for all to see and if it is free Apple will host it for free. So I don’t see the point.
Gabe Jacobs reply on July 9th, 2008 12:12 pm:
Apple is only letting certain developers into the app store, not all. This means that there will be a ton of app that will not be allowed in the app store such as apps like customize that will change the images on your iPhone. People love the apps and if apple does not allow, it is possible that this way would make it possible.
P.S. There is a huge difference between installer and the App Store. Only big developers and companies are allowed in the app store, but for installer, anyones is allowed.

anything’s possible. I just don’t see how this would work when Apple made a big deal during WWDC about providing “ad hoc” app distribution
