5 Reasons Why You Should And Shouldn’t Jailbreak Your iPhone

Tips and Tricks, iPhone

After playing with my hacked iPhone for a while, I have decided to tell you guys exactly why I did it and why someone might not want to do it.

The Reasons Why I Did It:

  • I can restore whenever I want and I have everything backed up. Unlike unlocking you iPhone, there is really is no way to “brick” your phone. This is because jailbreaking does not touch your baseband. The baseband is basically the OS that is used specifically for making and receiving calls. If you screw something up in your baseband while trying to unlock, your iPhone is done for. This is because restoring your iPhone does not touch the baseband. On the other hand, if you jailbreak and something goes wrong, you can always restore it to the way it was. Knowing this, I did not have to worry about something happening to my iPhone while jailbreaking (I was worried anyways, but thats just me).
  • I saw many examples of success. I looked on youtube and saw a ton of videos showing the process and success of jailbreaking their iPhone’s. I also looked online and talked to people on ZiPhone’s IRC network (irc.ziphone.org). These people all assured me that there was no harm in jailbreaking and gave me step-by-step guides. Both of these things obviously gave me a little bit more confidence in jailbreaking my iPhone.
  • There are some great apps. There are some really amazing things that people have developed for the iPhone. Its basically my main reason for jailbreaking my iPhone. For example, by far the best app is called Apollo IM. It is a standard, multi-client instant messenger. This is something Apple really forgot when writing the native apps for the iPhone. It works great and makes IM really fun on the iPhone. There are plenty of other great apps that I might talk about in a different post…
  • 4 months is a long time to wait for official iPhone apps. iPhone firmware 2.0 will released in June most likely at WWDC. Thats a pretty long time to wait, knowing you can get third party apps so easily. Why not enjoy third party apps for 4 months. It’s worth it.
  • I wanted to experience it. Jailbreaking your iPhone has been such a big thing in the Apple online community that I just felt a little left out by not having a jailbroken iPhone. I know that this sort of sounds like peer pressure, but it’s more like just wanting to experience it. I saw so many videos of people installing apps from installer that I just wanted to do it myself. I wanted to experience a jailbroken iPhone.

The Reasons Why You May Not Want To Do It:

  • Jailbreaking breaks your warranty. If you damage your iPhone, Apple won’t fix it. Some of my friends have damaged their jailed iPhones and gotten full replacements! This is not a possibility for someone with a jailbroken iPhone. Apple will just say, “The reason it’s not working is because you hacked it.” Hacking your iPhone is not sanctioned by Apple, so whatever you do is at your own risk.
  • There’s always a possibility of something bad happening. Even Zibri says, “ZiPhone has worked reliably for many iPhone users, but occasionally things do go
wrong.” If this happens, you could be left with a iPhone that is unable to restore. This happens because something in your iPhone so so corrupt that either iTunes cannot read your it or pressing restore just won’t work. Also, you have to be really careful when new firmware comes out. If you upgrade… It’s dead.
  • The apps are not that great A majority of the iPhone apps on installer are absolute pointless. Also, people make a lot of apps just to prove the point that it is possible, but actually do nothing helpful for the user. I have two examples. I downloaded this one apps called cowbell… You tap on it and it makes a cowbell noise, this is self explanatory. There is also an app that lets your record videos, but only 5 seconds long. Then, the only way to get it onto your computer it to SSH into your iPhone. Trust me there are a lot more apps that do nothing helpful than apps that cool or help you get things done.
  • Your iPhone works fine as it is. You love your iPhone and it already does everything you want it to. You just have to live for 4 months, knowing it can do so much more. It’s a great iPod, a great phone and a great internet communicator. Why should you jeopardize that?
  • The iPhone SDK looks amazing, and it’s coming in 4 months. We already saw the power of what companies could do in 2 weeks with the SDK. There is nothing like those apps in installer. No Touch Fighter, no Super Mokey Ball, no Spore. Come June, you will have all of that. It’s worth the wait.

If you are considering jailbreaking your iPhone, you have to realize that it is a stressful process. I was really scared when I was doing it and even though it ended up fine, I was still scared I was hurting it somehow. If your still not really sure if you want to do it or not, I would read over the list and see which ones you agree with more. If you agree with 3 about not jailbreaking and 2 about jailbreaking, don’t jailbreak. Even though I love my hacked iPhone and I think it’s an easy process, I have to suggest not doing it. This is because it is the safe thing to do and I don’t want to be responsible if something goes wrong.

If I had an iPod Touch or iPhone, I don’t think I would jailbreak it. I’ve played some of the games and messed around with some of the apps and they’re just not that great. If I were to get one, I would get the iPod Touch upgrade that they just released not that long ago and wait until 2.0. The only reason I would even think about jailbreaking it is for the IM capabilities.

    @Kevin S

I though the same thing as you do for a really long time. There was no reason to do it, and you might as well just wait. If you had an iPod touch… you would probably get bored of it knowing that you could jailbreak it any time. Thats what happened to me and thats why I did it.

I understand that this topic probably doesn’t interest you much so, I will only do 1 or 2 more posts about it.
