5 Changes I Want To See In the New Macbook Pro

Apple, Mac

I own a MacBook, but there is no doubt that I will be getting a MacBook Pro sometime in the next 3 years. Even though I could use a MacBook Pro now, I would not buy it because I am waiting for some changes to be made. Once these changes, or at least some of these changes are made, I will be much more interested in buying a MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro is a great computer as it is, but Apple could do a lot better with it by changing a few things. I also think that there is not enough of a difference between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro for the extra money to be worth it. $2000+ is a lot of money and it should be worth all of the money. With these changes, I think it will be worth all of it. Here are 5 changes that I would like to see in the next Macbook Pro.

1. The MacBook Pro keyboard is somewhat out of date. The MacBook, MacBook Air and the new thin Apple keyboards all have the same sort of keyboard. I am in love with these quiet, plastic keyboards and it is about time that the MacBook Pro receives them too. In my opinion, the MacBook Pro keyboard is much harder to type on and does not have a very good tactile response. I want to see the same keyboard on the MacBook Air in the MacBook Pro. It should be black and plastic, just like in the MacBook Air. This is huge and is a necessity for me.

2. Another thing that the MacBook Pro doesn’t have that all other Apple laptops do have is a magnetic latch. Everyone loves the ability to open the MacBook without have to get your finger in that little rectangular button. This is a small change, but one that is needed. I won’t make my decision to buy a MacBook Pro off of this, but it is something that would be a huge disappointment if Apple left out.

3. Instead of a price drop, 4GB of RAM, standard. RAM is very expensive when bought through Apple. Most people will buy Macs with as little RAM as possible and then buy RAM separately through a different source. Apple should recognise this and start bump up the RAM to 4GB standard. They should do this instead of lowering the prices of the MacBook Pro because consumers will feel they are getting a much better deal and it will further sell the “pro” experience. It can also make a good distinction between the MacBook and MacBook Pro. In order to upgrade from 2GB of RAM to 4GB of RAM in the MacBook, you have to pay $200. It gives you even more of a reason to spend that extra money on a MacBook Pro. If Apple were to be really nice, they would also make 2.5 GHZ the standard and allow 2.6 GHZ as an upgrade. I think this is very possible because Intel is always pushing out updates to their processors.

4. We definitely need some sort of design change. In my opinion, the MacBook Pro does not have the kind of style that the MacBook and MacBook Air have. The classic, thick, all aluminum look is just getting to old for me and I think a change will give people a whole new perspective. The aluminum is not really what bothers me, but it’s the thick layer underneath the keyboard. Apple has definitely shown that they have the potential to make their products lighter and thinner without loosing the quality of the device. I’m not asking for a whole lot of change, just enough to make a difference. I would actually also love to see something similar to the black MacBook, but shiny and glossy. Maybe something similar to this:

Tell me that’s not a sexy looking MacBook Pro…(pretend it had leopard on it, not tiger)

5. The MacBook Pro is going to have an iSight HD. There has been rumors of Apple working on an iSight HD based on code in QuickTime. This would be a great new addition that could be strictly for the MacBook Pro. If Apple were to pull this off, it would be awesome.

I think people would be very pleased if Apple were to address at least some of these changes. What changes do you want to see in the next MacBook Pro?

I wouldn’t worry too much. The MacBook Pro will no doubt be getting a whole new look on the next major update, as it has the same casing as the PowerBook from years ago. I think this is pretty much a given. Though, I assume they’ll be keeping with aluminium, so I’m not sure about a plastic keyboard. But you never know. Apple are full of surprises :)
Have a think about something, though. If Apple made the MacBook Pro a lot thinner, offered 4GB RAM standard, and included a high definition iSight camera, how much do you think it would cost? It would be out of a LOT of people’s price ranges, and then Apple would need another model in the price range of the current MacBook Pro. Not to mention, a thinner laptop would take some of the sales away from the MacBook Air. Don’t forget that Apple got Intel to make them a completely new CPU that is smaller and runs cooler, specifically for the MacBook Air (which costs way more than it is worth if you ask me).

At this current point in time, it’s simply far to costly to include a lot of what you’d like to see in the MacBook Pro. In the future, sure, when these things become a standard in most computers. The only thing I can see happening in the next major update is, as I said, a complete design change.

    reemixx,

I agree with most of what you said. Maybe what I was looking for is too much to ask from Apple, but when you think about it, it wouldn’t have to be a lot more expensive. 4GB of RAM standard is $200 more than 2GB of RAM. If Apple actually does make 4GB standard and added on $200, there would be no point in upgrading. This is why they won’t add on the $200 and keep it the same price.

The redesign does not have to take away that much space because I’m sure quality is much more important than how size of the machine to a lot of people. Really, the redesign would only be a style sort of change. That should not add on much more cash

I don’t really know about the iSight HD….

Im guessing Apple does only a few of my suggestions, maybe 1 or 2, and does not change the price. Is this hard to imagine?

A new keyboard like the one on MBA, is keeping me away from buying a MacBook Pro. The design is indeed old and I was hoping for a new release during the Apple WWDC 2008.
When do you recon a new model will be announced?

    Cheers,

    dgt79,

I am guessing at Macworld 09. If not, it would be a huge disappointment.

Recently purchased a Macbook Pro. After years of using PCs (not by choice), I was finally able to go back to Mac (owned many in the past). I do run XP via Fusion, Adobe CS3, etc. I probably went over the top (2.6, 4GB, etc.), but got a very good sale at the time. I have been using a lightweight SONY (3.7 lbs). I appreciate the large screen for working when away from home(where I hook up to Dell 24 LCD), but what I don’t like is the weight and size since I tote both computers back and forth during the week(ugh). The backlit keyboard is something I could not give up now - love it! Is there as much heat with the Macbook?
Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase, but if they come out with something skinnier and lighter, I’m in. :-) Now if I could only get my blackberry to tether, I would really be a happy camper.

Really like your site and design, Gabe!
