Where Has Gabe Been - Developing iPhone Apps

When the App Store Came out, I was amazed as a consumer. I loved downloading and buying iPhone apps. They were simply outstanding. Now that the hype has slowed down a little bit, I have developed a different view of the App Store. The App Store is fantastic for developers. Unlike Mac apps, every iPhone app is in the App Store and every consumer goes to the App Store. This gives a great opportunity for developers to really sell their apps to a good amount of people. This is why I have decided to try out X-Code, learn some Objective-C and get some apps out there.

I have spent the last few days reading this great PDF called Become An Xcoder, which teaches you the basics of Objective-C like you do not know a single thing, which is exactly what I needed. Next, I watched some good tutorials on iPhone Dev Central which helped me get a feel of how iPhone programing works. I finally got myself a good “Hello World” app which was quite hard to actually figure out.

Now, I am developing my very own app, that I cannot release at this moment, but don’t worry, it will be out before your know it. Anyway, just wanted to give you guys an update on what I was doing. See ya :)

Apple Give MobileMe Members A Free 60 Day Extension

Today I got this e-mail from Apple in my MobileMe inbox:

I am glad Apple recognizes their mistakes and supports their users appropriately. I think the 60 day extension is a pretty solid amount compared to the amount of down time they have been experiencing in the last month or so. Thanks for the free 60 days apple :)

I found a very funny javascript trick online that will let you edit any webpage in the world! Just go to a webpage that you want to change and put this code in the address bar:

javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0

It’s good to trick friends into making them think something is real. Think about the possibilities…

I love watching the Olympics. Wether it’s watching US crush everyone is swimming, or watching them come so close to gold in gymnastics. Unfortunately, we don’t have TV’s everywhere! If you have an iPhone, your in luck. You can get updates on the Bejing Olympics in many ways and here I will show you 5.

To start, there is a great web app called iOlympics. I know most people are getting used to native apps, but this one is actually almost as good as the native ones. It has a great news section which collaborates all the news from the different broadcasters and stations.

Now lets get on to the native apps. The best one, in my opinion is the Lenovo Summer Olympics 2008 App. It is free and gives you almost everything you could want to know about the Olympics. It has a nice UI for Olympic news, athletes, photos and blogs.

Debatably, the second best way to get the Olympics on your iPhone is an app called Sports Tap. Sports Tap gives you information about all sports, but it also has the Olympics as one of the icons you can tap. Sports Tap give you a nice, clean interface with basic information. It is a very good app for quick news, results and medal counts. It is also good because it it’s not a waste after the Olympics are over, like some other applications are. It also does not cost a cent.

Apple’s Misleading iPhone 3G Ad - How It Was Done

There has been a lot of talk about Apple’s iPhone 3G ad, “unslow” being fake and misleading. There was even a video comparing the ad and a real life demonstration. The video shows that Apple’s ad is sped up to exaggerate the speed of the iPhone. I put this to the test myself and found that it is also very misleading. Since I believe this ad is in fact not in real time, I am going to show everyone exactly how Apple edited these ads. Here is my video:

As you can see, the way I did this was by simple splitting and cutting out the parts of the video that shows the page loading. I only kept the short parts of the video where the page changes.

You can also see that in the unedited version of the video, the iPhone and the camera does not move. This is essential because if there was movement, you would see jerking in the final video. In Apple’s ad, we can see the hand, the iPhone or the camera does not move a bit. This is a hint that the video was edited similarly to the way mine was edited.

Watch Apple’s ad and you will see that not only the safari bit was edited, but the whole thing. As you can see in the maps part, the video cuts right he presses the locate me button and then start up again right as it has found him. It is as easy as cutting out the waiting time. The downloading of the file is also obviously false and it was done the same way as the others.

Do you think this ad is false? I don’t see how you couldn’t…
